ANGOLA RENEWS DDI FINANCIAL SUPPORT
23 December 2013

The government of Angola has renewed its financial commitment to the Diamond Development Initiative (DDI), which works with African governments, as well as civil society organizations and industry members, on projects aimed at formalizing the artisanal diamond-mining sector, educating on human rights issues, and improving the sector's working conditions and incomes.

According to DDI, this sector has come into greater focus since the adoption of the Washington Declaration in 2012 at that year's Kimberley Process (KP) plenary meeting. The Declaration lays out an ambitious agenda of social and economic development imperatives, related to the artisanal and small-scale diamond-mining sector, which are to be integrated into KP implementation.

"We are working every day to cultivate development solutions that will change the face of the artisanal mining industry, where more than 1.5 million people work under difficult circumstances. When African governments, like Angola, step up to the plate and show us their support and faith in our work, it inspires us to work harder and reach higher," says DDI Executive Director, Dorothée Gizenga.

"I believe that African governments must be partners in helping to solve the problems we are addressing," adds DDI Chairman, Ian Smillie. "The Government of Angola's continuing commitment to our cause demonstrates constructive and meaningful engagement."
