|On Tuesday this week Alrosa Vice President Andrey Polyakov announced that he would be leaving Alrosa at the end of this week, and consequently would be stepping down from the World Diamond Council (WDC) presidency, also by the end of this week.
The announcement appears to have been unexpected and quite shocking to the organization's members (there is some speculation that it was the result of internal politics within Alrosa). Polyakov's role in the WDC was as Alrosa's official representative within the organization.
Following Polyakov's announcement, the WDC issued a statement confirming that the current president, Andrey Polyakov, would be resigning by the end of the week, and advising that WDC's Vice President Stephane Fischler will become acting President effective July 1, 2017.
Fischler will serve as acting President until the end of the term of the current WDC Board, beginning his official two-year term as WDC President in May 2018.
Polyakov remarked that, "It has been an honor to serve as President of the WDC and to be a part of an organization tasked with such an important mission for our industry."
Continues Polyakov: "We have achieved much together, but assuring that the diamond supply chain remains virtually free of conflict diamonds will take vigilance and an ongoing commitment to education and training for the next generation of industry stewards." Commenting on Polyakov's resignation, WDC Vice President Fischler says, "We owe a debt of gratitude to Andrey for his leadership, and I, along with the rest of the members, look forward to continuing the good work he began with us."
